Dr. Heather Eaton Position: Technician/Lab Manager Start Date: January 2014 History: Heather grew up in Ontario and completed her undergraduate degree in biology at McMaster University. For her Ph.D. she went to Trent University to study iridoviruses and then came to the University of Alberta for her postdoc to study herpesviruses. In 2014 she couldn't pass up an opportunity to join the Shmulevitz lab and has been there ever since. Tim Footz Position: Lab Technician Start Date: March 2023 History: Tim grew up in Edmonton, completing his BSc (Specialization in Genetics, '96) and MSc (Molecular Biology & Genetics, '99) at the University of Alberta. From 1999 to the present, he worked in various labs on campus, contributing to publications on the topics of gene annotation, microchip DNA diagnostics, functional characterization of ocular disease genes, and brain stem cell biology. He is excited to delve into animal research of oncolytic virology and viral vaccines in the Shmulevitz lab. |
Francisca Cristi Muñoz
Position: Graduate student (PhD) Start Date: September 2016 History: Fran grew up in Santiago, Chile. She did her undergrad in Biochemistry and Master in Biochemistry at University of Chile. However, for her MSc thesis, she went to a different University, Pontifical Catholic University, to study neural stem cells and spinal cord regeneration. After that, she worked for two years as a research assistant in immunology laboratories in Chile before moving to Edmonton, Canada and joining the Shmulevitz laboratory. |
Justine Kniert Position: Graduate student (PhD) Start Date: May 2019 History: Justine grew up in the small town of Fruitvale, B.C. before moving to Kelowna, B.C. There, she completed her undergraduate degree in biochemistry with a research project on the metabolism of fatty acids (BSc. Hons.) from the University of British Columbia, Okanagan. Following two years working as a pharmacy assistant, she moved to Edmonton to join the Shmulevitz lab, commencing her graduate student journey. Project: Investigating the assembly mechanisms of reovirus within the tumor cell. Qi Feng Lin
Position: Graduate student (PhD) Start Date: September 2020 History: Qi Feng grew up in Montreal before moving to Vancouver during high school. For his undergraduate degree, he went back to Montreal to study Biochemistry at McGill University where he did an honours project on the molecular determinants of Zika virus evasion of host innate immunity. After obtaining his B.Sc., he moved to Edmonton to join the Shmulevitz lab in 2020, an exciting year for the field of virology Maia Finch Position: Graduate student (MSc) Start Date: September 2022 History: Maia grew up in Carrollton, Texas before moving to Kelowna, British Columbia in 2017 to begin her undergraduate degree. She graduated from the University of British Columbia (Okanagan) in 2021 with a BSc Honours in Microbiology. For her honours thesis, she investigated the effect of childhood adversity on the composition and diversity of the gut microbiome in adults. Following graduation, she worked in the Pakpour lab at UBCO for one year and then moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 2022 to begin graduate studies in the Shmulevitz lab. Dirk Taal Position: Graduate student (MSc) Start Date: September 2022 History: Dirk grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. In 2022, he completed his undergraduate degree (BSc. Honors) in Immunology and Infection at the University of Alberta. His honors research project focused on Viperin, an Interferon Stimulated Gene (ISG), and its association with Influenza A Virus infection in ducks. He is currently working towards a PhD in the Shmulevitz Lab. Maiah Walters Position: Undergraduate student Start Date: May 2022 History: Maiah grew up in Edmonton, Alberta and is currently in her last year of undergraduate studies under the Honors Immunology and Infections program. She has always been fascinated by the field of virology and novel immunotherapies and was thrilled with the opportunity to work with both when she joined the Shmulevitz lab the summer of 2022. She is continuing to work with oncolytic reovirus for her honors project this year. Jessica Ramos
Position: Undergraduate student Start Date: May 2022 History: Jessica grew up here in Edmonton, Alberta and has always had an interest in medical sciences. She enrolled at the University of Alberta in 2018 and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in honours Immunology and Infection. She joined the Shmulevitz lab for her honours project because she was fascinated by the idea of oncolytic viruses, and how something we think of as harmful, is also something that can be used for good through its potential for cancer therapy. |
